THE CARDIGAN WELSH CORGIS - LACY JANE | PUPPERS | Others to follow

Late November 2007 a large number of dogs, cats and birds were seized from an area breeder-hoarder.  The legal process was slow and complex.  After a jury trial in February 2009 the court granted custody of the animals to the Warren County Humane Society and twenty-five Cardigan Welsh Corgis became available for adoption.

Miss EmilySixteen months is a long time to spend at the shelter.  Some of the dogs were very old.  Some were battling cancer.  Many were very timid and struggled with socialization issues.

Some of the dogs found their forever families in Warren County.  Others found wonderful loving homes out of state. Thanks to the help and support of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi National Rescue Trust  all of the dogs now have homes of their own.  Before they left the shelter all were spayed or neutered and had any special medical needs addressed.

The dogs finding their forever homes included Lacy Jane, a very young female who delivered her puppies two days after she was rescued; and Puppers, a big old fellow full of bravado and willing to challenge any male.

LACY JANE TELLS HER STORY

Lacy Jane            My name is Lacy Jane and I am a three year old Cardigan Corgi.  In 2007, the WCHS rescued me from an unacceptable living situation.  I was pregnant at nine months of age.  I was relieved to be rescued by the very kind caring people of WCHS!  The volunteers at WCHS treated me so well including providing nutritious food, clean living conditions, medical attention, and lots and lots of love and attention.  I was so fortunate to be rescued by them.  Although the WCHS photographer took a great photograph of me for the WCHS website, I remained in WCHS for 20 months.  At least two of the volunteers Karen and Joan became concerned about me becoming a shelter dog since I became withdrawn, did not want to leave my kennel, and was terrified of cars.

Thankfully in May 2009, my family found me via Petfinder.com and the WCHS website!  They drove a very long way to check me out.  We immediately bonded because I could tell that they were good folks.  First they smelled like dogs since they have a golden retriever.  Then they petted me, spoke kindly to me, and focused their attention completely on me.  After a few days, Karen let me be fostered by my new family.  I was thrilled!  We drove a very long way to my new home.  I must admit that I was a very good girl in the car.

It's a Dog's Life: Relaxing on her sofa

When we reached my new house, I was tired but very excited.  My new house is a good size and very nice with lots of comfortable dog beds, a big fenced in backyard, and a box filled with squeak toys!  My new aunt bought me a pink and black checked dog food bowl; it is very snazzy!  I hit the jackpot!  I have a new sister Cassie who is much older than I am but she is terrific!  I follow her around because she knows the terrain better than I do.  Sometimes I sleep next to her.  We eat side by side and she never steals my food and I never steal her food.

It was several days with my new family before I expressed myself vocally.  I heard some neighborhood dogs barking and felt that I needed to respond.  My new Mom was thrilled to hear my very adorable bark.  Later, I learned that she does not like me to bark before 6AM because I might wake up the neighborhood.  However, I typically bark in the morning to wake up Mom and Cassie.  They could sleep longer but I need to get going.  We then walk several laps around the backyard.  Sometimes I am so busy sniffing and running around, that I forget to take care of business so Mom makes me do another lap or two.  I am almost housebroken.  We then have a great breakfast.

Cassie and I then relax while Mom gets ready for work.  We typically sleep until our dog walker visits us in the middle of the day.  One of my favorite daytime spots is under the dining room table on the plush carpet.  It is very secure spot for me.  I also have a stockpile of Mom’s shoes and socks under the dining room table but don’t tell Mom.  When Mom gets home from work, we do more laps in the backyard and have a delicious supper.  Later, Mom tries to get me to walk around our subdivision but I am not entirely comfortable with this yet.  On the weekends, we go to the local park and walk around.

We are getting ready to go on vacation.  I can’t wait.  Mom is going to pack my toys and food and then we will drive a long way.  We hope to go hiking in the woods and see my cousins, a Pembroke Corgi Gelert and Lucky. We may go swimming in the lake; since I don’t know if I can swim, Mom said that she would hold me while I try swimming.

If you have any questions for me about being adopted or my Mom about the joys of fostering and adopting, please contact the WCHS.

HAPPY TAILS: Puppers in Paradise

PuppersThanks to the wonderful folks at the Cardigan Welsh Corgi National Rescue Trust the last of our rescued corgis went to his forever home in June.

This great old guy was lots of fun and very friendly with people but a “Super Macho Guy ” around other male dogs.  His scared snout was testament to his willingness to do battle.

Neutering turned this old warrior in to a “lover.”  Puppers will spend the rest of his life in Indiana roaming verdant pastures with four lovely Cardigan “ladies."  We bet he thinks he is living in paradise.
