PETEY'S
STORY
“When Petey, a large approximately 10-year-old golden
retriever, came to the Warren County Humane Society, he weighed almost
40 pounds; he was literally skin and fur on bones. He had lots of other
problems too, including eye and ear infections, wounds, fleas, and sores
on his feet and body. He had gone without food for so long that he
wouldn’t eat. Some may have given up on him, but not the Humane Society.
They told me that every day they lined up bowls with various kinds of
food, encouraging him to eat. Petey was taken to the vet several times
by the Humane Society staff, treated with various medications and
antibiotics and, in time, gained several pounds. Once he was healthier,
he was able to go for walks with their volunteers.
“I met Petey the first day he was found and fell
instantly in love with him! I immediately contacted the Humane Society
and called often to learn of his progress. Once he was adoptable, I put
in my application and when approved, I became Petey’s mom.
“Although I often stated I would never adopt an older
dog because I would have to let go sooner, I have now changed my
mindset. Petey is definitely heaven-sent. He is the most gentle, loving
dog I have ever known. He gets between your legs to show you he loves
you and to get his head petted. When you show him attention, he puts his
paw on your arm to show his love and when you rub his ears he purrs like
a cat.
“Petey loves me unconditionally, as I do him, and he
gives me much more than I could ever ask from a dog or any other living
creature! If I’m away from him, I know when I get home I’ll get my
‘Petey fix’ as he lovingly responds to me and others. I pray that
Petey’s former life was filled with love and that he had someone who
cared about him. However, his final years will be spent with someone who
does.
“All this is possible because of the untiring efforts
of the Warren County Humane Society staff and volunteers. I can’t begin
to thank them for all they did for Petey and for their loving care of
all the dogs, cats and other animals that enter their door. Petey and I
thank you!
“And, on a final note… Petey now weighs 80 pounds!”
